60 Seconds with Clare McDonald

Meet Clare, a web designer who couldn’t be without her iPad, Kindle and a case of Sauvignon Blanc!

3 words that describe you best?

Logical, loyal & a night-owl!

What was your first ever job?

I had a paper round seven days a week, 363 days a year. Then I worked in the local library.

What’s on your desk right now?

Unusually I’m working on my laptop at the dining table because my PC won’t let me into any websites I’m working on! My desk upstairs however has (are you ready for this?); a Lego space shuttle, Poe Dameron’s Lego X-Wing, old family photos, a picture of Jerzy Dudek saving Shevchenko’s penalty in the 2005 Champions League Final and a very loud clock as well as lots of Lego and Pop figures and dozens of notepads I really don’t need as a web designer! My office is definitely my space and has a busy feel to it. Cluttered desk, clear head is my motto!!!

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I don’t think I ever thought about it hugely beyond going to university. The first job I probably wanted to do with any conviction was be a researcher of some sort.

Which device or piece of equipment could you not live without?

Probably my iPad because it can do the most things.

What’s your favourite tool of your trade?

Oooh, tricky one. I’m going to go simple and say a mouse! So much of web design is clicking here and there, dragging things around etc. you just can’t do it without one.

What’s in your handbag?

Not a lot. I don’t tend to keep stuff in one but all have a packet of tissues, some receipts and free crayons from restaurants!

How do you relax?

Reading or just messing about on my computer. Even work can be relaxing if it’s something I enjoy doing!

What’s your favourite holiday destination?

It has to be my parents’ house in France. We go for the whole summer which is the benefit of working from home and being married to a teacher! The children run wild through the fields and woods and generally reappear when they’re hungry!

What do you find most difficult?

Focusing on one thing at a time! I tend to flit between things until the evening when I really get on with one job and finish it. I also need to learn to say no!

Best piece of advice to someone starting out with their own business?

Take your time and know your limits initially. It’s more important to get things right with a few clients and build from there than jump in too quickly and lose confidence.

You’re stranded on a desert island. What 3 things would you choose to have with you?

iPad (with everlasting battery!), a case of Sauvignon Blanc and my Kindle full of all my favourite books!

Superheroes are always on topic in our house. Who is our favourite Superhero?

Not one I’ve ever thought particularly strongly about. Loved the first Batman film when it came out in 1989 but my superheroes were more Super Ted and Bananaman!

Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman?

Batman – don’t know why!

And finally, the plug?

I’m Clare, I work as a web designer and, along with my graphic designer friend, specialise in design for individuals and small businesses. I have a background in advertising and marketing so approach web design in a slightly different way than traditional developers.
